Most generally believe the name Subic was derived from the native word “hubek” which means “head of a plow.” The name appears to have persisted, with the spelling and pronunciation changing over the passing of time. Spanish colonizers seem to have interpreted it as “Subiq,” while the first batch of American settlers here changing it to “Subig” and finally to its modern pronunciation “Subic.”
