SUBIC, Zambales: Olongapo City Mayor Rolen Paulino has warned owners and representatives of beach resorts and waterfront establishments here to adopt measures to clean up their surroundings, including putting up waste treatment facilities and upgrade their properties based on the Department of Tourism (DOT) standards or face closure.

Addressing a gathering of businessmen invited by the city’s tourism and engineering departments, Paulino said they are with the national government’s tough stance against environmental pollution in tourism destination areas in the country.

He said those based in Olongapo, especially in the Barretto area where beachside business establishments are located, must now address their sewerage and septage facilities, among other concerns to prevent contributing to environmental pollution in the city and Subic Bay.

The city government also informed resort owners the plan to put up a waste drainage along Barretto in identified areas, as well as a Sewage Treatment Plant.

Paulino also warned tourism–oriented establishments that the city government will only issue or renew business permits of establishments that comply with Department of Environment and Natural Resources and DOT requirements.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano on Friday assured that all facilities for the country’s hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games will be finished promptly, and this includes the New Clark City.

The area, which will host the centerpiece athletics and aquatics events, is being built on a 9,450-hectare land in Capas town, Tarlac by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority.

“We will make sure that no glitches would ruin our hosting of the Games,” said Cayetano, appointed by President Duterte as chairman of the SEA Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc).

“This early, even our major projects like the New Clark City has September of next year as target of completion. That’s a tall order, but it can be done.”

A majority of the events will be held at the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga, through the support of the Clark Development Corp.

Other events will take place in Subic Freeport Zone in Zambales and will get support from the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.

Metro Manila will host other events such as basketball and volleyball.

“But we will showcase spots outside of Metro Manila . . . We have coordinated with the provinces within the fringes of hosts Clark and Subic to showcase their best before our guests,” Cayetano said, adding that local tourism expects a boost around the time the Games get underway.

Late last year, Tuason Racing School announced the introduction of Giti-Formula V1 in the Philippines. After months of preparations, it’s all systems go for the country’s newest single make series that pits some of the country’s professional racers wheel to wheel. With this new series, Giti-Formula V1 Philippines aims to bring local talent into the international scene yet again.

With the collaborative efforts of Tuason Racing School and West Racing Cars Japan, the cars that will be used is the VITA-01. It has an open cockpit design and the single seater race car kit sits on a tubular steel frame chassis covered by a composite body and weighs about 530 kg. Power is sourced from a 1.5-liter engine courtesy of Toyota. It makes 110 PS and has a claimed top speed of 200 km/h. Given its light weight, the VITA-01 offers a high power to weight ratio.

As the vehicle is intended for the race tracks, the Giti-Formula V1 series is mainly intended for more drivers who have more seat time and race experience. The car itself has proven its worth on the track when it bagged the overall win in last year’s Philippine Endurance Challenge with Mike Tuason, Bjorn Ongtiaobok, Louis Ramirez, Ferdie Ong and Luis Gono taking turns behind the wheel.

Season one of Giti-Formula V1 will see four rounds this year with three sprint races and one endurance run. The first round of Formula V1 Philippines will be held on May 12 to 13 at the Batangas Racing Circuit. The other three rounds will all be held at the Clark International Speedway. Round two will be in August, round three in October and the endurance finale in November. Whoever bags the title this year gets the chance to compete with the some of the top V1 Racers in Japan at the Fuji Speedway.

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) is bringing to Subic a new way of boosting both human and nature’s health — “plogging.”

SBMA Chairman and Administrator Wilma T. Eisma said plogging, a new term that blends the English word “jogging” and the Swedish phrase “plocka upp” or pick up, started in Sweden and is now becoming popular in parts of Europe and the United States.

“Essentially, plogging is about doing your regular jogging routine, but you have to bring with you a trash bag where you can put all the litter you can pick up along the way,” Eisma explained.

She added that through its Ecology Center, the SBMA will be launching the first Subic Bay Plog Down — a combination of jogging, fun run and picking litter, on May 4 at the Boardwalk Events Center here in line with its “War On Waste” initiatives.

The event is open to public with ages seven years old and above.

Ecology Center manager Amethya Dela Llana explained that Subic Bay Plog Down aims to promote plogging as an exercise that promotes endurance, muscle firmness and harmony, and to stimulate environmental understanding by encouraging communities to suggest solutions on reducing trash in the Freeport.

“Plog Down aims to evoke environmental malasakit by exposing nearby communities to Subic Bay Freeport clean-up,” Dela Llana said.

Under the Plog Down project, all registered participants would pick up trash along their chosen route: within one hour for Route 1 which has a 2-kilometer distance, or one-and- half hour for Route 2 which has a 3-kilometer distance.

Trash placed in the sacks should only be those considered as litter under the No Littering Policy of the SBMA. All trash thus collected by individual participants will be weighed and recorded.

Dela Llana added that the Subic Bay Plog Down project is just one of the many environment-awareness programs that the SBMA Ecology Center has lined up under its War On Waste initiatives.

Coinciding with the Plog Down event, SBMA will be celebrating Earth Day 2018 in the Subic Bay Freeport with its international theme “End Plastic Pollution” through the conduct of the 4 th Recyclables Collection Event (RCE), also on May 4 at the former Legenda Blue Building along the Boardwalk Area.

RCE is a semi-annual event that lets companies inside the Freeport dispose of everyday hazardous workplace wastes properly. Items brought to the event will be bought by accredited recyclers.

Some of the waste materials that can be submitted for collection during the event are laboratory chemicals, solvents, aerosols, batteries, fluorescent tubes, garage waste, household hazardous waste, oils, paints, pharmaceutical waste and photographic and printing waste.

The waste collectors would also accept electronic wastes such as busted washing machines, electric fans, and ovens.

Proceeds of the event will go to Lingkod Kapamilya Bantay Kalikasan ABS-CBN Foundation, which has community-based eco-tourism projects. Meanwhile, the PET bottles collected will be sent to the Tahanang Walang Hagdan.
