As one of the top tourist destinations across Asia and the world, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority kicks off this year’s National Tourism Week in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone this Sunday, September 24, with the opening of a trade exhibit at the Harbor Point Mall. The weeklong celebration will put a spotlight on the numerous hallmarks and achievements attained by the Freeport in the tourism industry. With the theme “Sustainable Tourism, a Tool for Development”, fun-filled activities which are open to the public are scheduled throughout the week until September 30.

With activities that range from a motorcade, to photo exhibits, to familiarization tours around the Freeport, to competitions; there’s more than enough to share with your friends and family.

In simple ceremonies at the DOF’s main office in Manila, Dominguez administered to Escolango the latter’s Oath of Office.

Escolango, a lawyer with a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Administration, has around seven years of experience as Deputy Administrator (DA) of SBMA before he was designated OIC Administrator late in 2016.

He began his career in public service as a Clerk at a Manila court, and joined SBMA when he already had a thriving private law practice.

He expressed appreciation of President Duterte’s trust and confidence in appointing him to the position and vowed to work in line with the thrust, plans & programs of Sec. Dominguez. (VVV)

REPRESENTATIVES of Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Philippines (HHIC-Phil) and leaders of the workers’ union Alyansa ng Manggagawang Organisadong Pilipino-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (AMAPO- TUCP) have agreed on a venue for the conduct of a certification election of the three company unions.

This after a series of talks failed to determine where to hold a certification election for the recognition of the workers’ union of Hanjin located at the Subic Bay Freeport.

About 30,000 workers of the shipbuilding giant earlier this month said they will go on strike if no agreement is reached on the venue for the certification election.

Bobby Flores, AMAPO-TUCP president, said Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) officials have set the venue at San Pablo basketball court in Castillejos town where workers of three sub-contractor companies of Hanjin will participate in the voting.

Under the rules, each of the labor organizations in subcontractors Sushicor, Zambanas, and Hacor Phil Corp. needs to get 50 percent of the yes votes plus one of the workers to be certified as a union. Once unionized the workers can negotiate a Collecting Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with their respective companies.
A vote less than the required number will be in favor of Hanjin.

Figures provided The Manila Times showed Hacor has 374 workers, Sushicor 1,580, and Zambanas 2,092.

AMAPO-TUCP said it has organized a union in each of the 18 sub-contractor companies of Hanjin and 14 of these unions have received an order for the conduct of a certification election. About 30,000 of the 38,000 Hanjin workers are now members of the AMAPO-TUCP federation.

The representatives of Hanjin and the labor unions have met eight times to negotiate the terms of the certification election particularly the venue.

AMAPO-TUCP initially wanted the venue near the gate of Hanjin shipyard in Redondo Peninsula but Hanjin reportedly objected and suggested the Subic Gym located across the bay, about two hours of travel time from the shipyard.

On September 27 Sushicor workers will be the first to conduct the certification election from 5:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Zambanas workers will vote on September 28, and Hacor workers on September 29.

The certification election of other unions within Hanjin will be scheduled depending on the agreement between the firm’s management and the labor union.

Subic EnerZone Corporation (SEZ) inaugurated new 33MVA transformer to increase the capacity of its Remy Field Substation from 20 to 33 MVA.

The new transformer will avoid overloading during single outage scenarios that may result to lower life span of transformer.

The newly installed 33MVA transformer replaces the nearly 5 decade old 20 MVA transformer which was installed during SBMA’s Navy time . This will address the current needs of Subic Bay Freeport Zone increasing demand.

Balanga City, Bataan — This province will be having 200 new fishing boats care of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the first nine of these were already distributed to fishermen last Monday by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

The ceremonial turnover of the fishing boats was led by BFAR Director Wilberto Cruz, with Governor Abet S. Garcia receiving the fiberglass boats at the Capitol right after the flag ceremony.

In a short message, Garcia thanked DA Secretary Manny Piñol for granting their request for this package of additional livelihood for Bataan’s fishermen.

According to Provincial Agriculturist Imelda Nieto, 75 boats will be coming from Bataan 2nd District Representative Joet S. Garcia, while another 50 will come from Partylist Rep. Harry Roque.
