SUBIC BAY FREEPORT: More companies based here have joined the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority’s (SBMA) “War on Waste” since the start of the Recyclable Collection Event (RCE) project in 2016, SBMA Ecology Center manager Amethya de la Llana said.

“Our business locators now see the benefits of properly disposing of trash. It’s orderly and more efficient, as well as economical,” de la Llana said during the 6th RCE held at the former mini-golf course along Waterfront Road here.

The participating companies brought to the event various recyclable items like used car batteries, cardboard and paper scraps and light bulbs.

“It has been our company’s initiative to properly dispose of our hazardous wastes, being a company that conducts inspection, verification and tests on various products such as gas, oil and other chemicals,” said Marge Lingad, administrative officer of locator SGS Subic Bay Inc.

Lingad said the firm used to outsource treatment of wastes generated by their operation. “But now we found an economical way to dispose of these and at the same time, help raise funds for the environment,” she added.

Recyclable items generated through the SBMA project were sold to recyclers, and proceeds were donated to the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, which funds Bantay Kalikasan, an organization that promotes a healthy environment for local communities.

In the recently concluded 6th RCE, the SBMA Ecology Center recognized Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co.Ltd. for religiously donating recyclable trash since the pilot collection event three years ago, as well as for donating recyclable trash worth P32,160 during the previous RCE.

Other companies recognized for their contributions to the recycling project include Subic Truckboy, SGS (Subic Bay) Inc., Broadband Broadcast Services, Nidec Subic Philippines, Sanyo Denki Philippines Inc., Koryo Subic, Subic Bay International Terminal Corp., Wistron Infocomm Phils., Mateen Tokyo International Inc., and Apollo Subic International Trading Corp.

Among the SBMA departments, meanwhile, the Procurement and Property Management Department was recognized for turning in recyclables worth P297,380 at the 5th RCE in November 2018.

In a short program that kicked off the 6th RCE, dela Llana pointed out that when astronauts go to outer space, they experience the “overview effect” where they feel how fragile the earth is.

“I hope we do not have to go to outer space just to realize how fragile the earth is. With the series of earthquakes and aftershocks, let us help our environment adapt to the changes through environmentally-sound practices,” she added.

De la Llana also said recyclable items like old tires, expired medicines, rubber shoes/slippers and used clothes would be accepted in the next collection event.

The RCE is part of the SBMA’s War on Waste program that also includes an anti-littering drive, the regulated use of plastic straws and plastic bags for wet products, and a ban of single-use plastics.

Despite rains over some parts of the country, warm weather continues as heat indices in 18 monitoring stations nationwide have reached “dangerous” levels on Thursday, with Guiuan, Eastern Samar registering the highest heat index of the day at 50.8 degrees Celsius around mid-Thursday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) recorded the highest heat index on Thursday in Guiuan, followed by Ambulong, Batangas (46.2 degrees Celsius); Dagupan City in Pangasinan (45.3 degrees Celsius); Roxas City in Capiz (45.1 degrees Celsius); Sangley Point in Cavite (44.3 degrees Celsius); Cuyo, Palawan (43.1 degrees Celsius); El Salvador City in Misamis Oriental (42.8 degrees Celsius); San Jose City in Oriental Mindoro (42.6 degrees Celsius); NAIA in Pasay City (42.4 degrees Celsius); Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte (42.3 degrees Celsius); Cotabato City in Maguindanao (42 degrees Celsius); Subic Bay in Olongapo City (42 degrees Celsius); Iba, Zambales (42 degrees Celsius); Tuguegarao City in Cagayan province (41.9 degrees Celsius); Alabat, Quezon (41.7 degrees Celsius); Casiguran, Aurora (41.2 degrees Celsius); Masbate City (41.2 degrees Celsius); and Daet, Camarines Norte (41.0 degrees Celsius).

Heat index is the “apparent” temperature or what human perceive or feel as the temperature affects their body.

It is a combination of air temperature and humidity, thus it is higher by at least 2 to 3 degrees Celsius from the actual air temperature reading.

With heat indices between 41 and 54 degrees Celsius, PAGASA said there is impending “danger” as “heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely” and “heat stroke is probable with continued activity.”

Meanwhile, Legaspi City in Albay; Maasin, Southern Leyte; and Metro Manila also recorded heat indices on the 40s level at 40.6 degrees Celsius, 40.1 degrees Celsius, and 40.5 degrees Celsius, respectively.

With heat indices between 32 to 41 degrees Celsius, PAGASA advised residents to observe “extreme caution” as “heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible” and “continuing activity could result to heat stroke.”

If heat index is over 54 degrees Celsius, PAGASA said there is “extreme danger” as “heat stroke is imminent.”

This Friday, PAGASA expects the frontal system to prevail over extreme Northern Luzon, while the easterly winds—the warm and humid air coming from the east—to prevail over Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

MANILA – The new passenger terminal currently being constructed at the Clark International Airport (CIA) can withstand a powerful earthquake, an official of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) said Tuesday.

BCDA president Vince Dizon told ANC’s Headstart that the new airport building could withstand a temblor way above what the Building Code requires. The law requires buildings to be designed and built to withstand a quake of up to magnitude 8.4.

Dizon said the new terminal could resist the shaking of a quake as powerful as a magnitude 8.9.

“Not only is it going to be a strong airport but it’s going to be a very beautiful airport,” Dizon said on ANC’s Headstart.

The Clark International Airport in the former US military base in Pampanga was damaged by the strong quake that hit Luzon on April 22.

Dizon said no damage was found on the terminal under construction after the quake.

“After the earthquake, we had it checked and [the quake had] no effect,” said Dizon.

Since it was safe and there was no quake damage, Dizon said construction resumed the following day.

The new terminal is now 60-percent complete. It is expected to be opened next year and will be operated by the private sector, he said.

“Were on schedule to open this airport by June of next year. After so many years, we can move to the new terminal and close down the old terminal and we have to build again a better one,” he said.

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) will release a total of P6.5 million in financial aid to Pampanga and Zambales – provinces hit by the recent magnitude 6.1 Luzon earthquake.

According to PCSO board member Sandra Cam, the board has agreed to allocate P5 million to Pampanga, and another P1.5 million to Zambales.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located in Castillejos, Zambales, but Pampanga was the hardest-hit province. The PCSO’s financial aid will be turned over directly to the affected local government units.

The PCSO will help earthquake victims who are still in hospitals through its Individual Medical Assistance Program. The agency will also provide artificial legs to two victims who became amputees following the disaster, Maria Lourdes Martin and Desiree Pacun.

The total death toll from the earthquake has reached 18, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in its bulletin on Tuesday, April 29. At least 243 people were also injured, while 3 are missing, all in Central Luzon.

The latest NDRRMC report also said a total of 924 aftershocks have been recorded since the April 22 earthquake.
